About this book
"I want something different," thought the king, sighed the king, shouted the king. He had everything his heart desired, and everything was made of gold: his plate, his bed, his throne, his palace, his pen – in short, everything. And yet the king was not happy; on the contrary, he was sick with boredom. No one could cure him. One day, a poor writer came along. He told the king a story about very ordinary people who lived in a small cottage and had to work hard, but who were content and happy with the little they had. This marked the beginning of the king’s recovery. From this title story, we immediately sense the atmosphere of all the stories: the atmosphere of a longing for the other, the unattainable, whereby the joy found in ordinary, everyday things is lost sight of. These stories fit wonderfully into the dream world of a young child. After all, children can still take delight in the little things around us. But it is not just children; parents reading aloud will also derive great pleasure from these stories, which convey a certain wisdom without ever being preachy.
