About this book
To mark Book Week 2009, Altamira-Becht is publishing a collection full of extraordinary animal stories at an attractive price. Throughout the centuries, wise men and women have conveyed their spiritual messages through stories in which an animal plays the leading role. In this collection, we encounter a host of them: spiders, beavers, hares, coyotes, crows, tortoises, tigers, foxes, goats, lions, deer, donkeys, camels, foxes and so on, all hailing from every corner of the globe: Africa, North America, India, Greece, China and Persia. And although they are ancient, they are still very much alive. The editor, Wim van der Zwan, selected thirty-six short stories from a variety of traditions, retold them in his own words and organised them into six categories: the mystery of life; justice; hubris, pride and cowardice; freedom; idleness; attachment and greed.
