The main character in this book is Hans, Martin Luther’s eldest son. Hans is a real lad. He struggles with his Latin lessons, gets into fights with other boys at the market, but also loves listening to Aunt Lena when she recounts his father’s life story. He observes his father at the university and listens in on his table conversations with students and learned guests. At first, Hans feels he is living in the shadow of his famous father, but gradually discovers that he is his own person and that God has a path in life laid out for him.
