About this book
In many respects, 1983 was a memorable year in the history of trams in Twente. On 4 July 1908, 75 years ago, the Twentsche Electrische Tramweg-Maatschappij (TET) began operating the Enschede–Glanerbrug electric tram line. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the company never operated any routes other than this single one, although plans to expand the network were drawn up on several occasions. On 28 February 1933, almost a century ago now, this tram company – as unique as it was marginal – had already ceased operations. The author has provided a fascinating account of this 25-year period, as well as the section detailing the Nederlandsch Westfaalsche Stoomtram-Maatschappij (NWSM), the second tram company to have operated in this part of the eastern Netherlands. This line too, served by steam trams and running between Denekamp and Gronau, was marked by various anniversaries in 1983.
Despite the fact that a thick layer of dust has now settled over Twente’s tram history, the author has succeeded in providing a clear and thoroughly documented overview of these lines, which have long since disappeared. More than 100 photographs, some of which have never been published before, accompany the text, as do various construction drawings that enable the reader to relive a piece of Twente’s tram history.
